The Asahi-class destroyer is a class of general purpose destroyer in service in the Republic of Japan Navy. The Asahi-class is optimized for undersea warfare.
The lead ship, Asahi, is the third ship to hold the name after the Loch-class frigate (ex-HMS Loch Odairn (K642)) lent from the British Empire in 1955, and the Imperial Japanese pre-dreadnought battleship. The second ship of the class, Shiranui, is the third ship to hold the name after the Murakumo and Kagerou-class destroyers
