The Astute-class is the latest class of nuclear-powered fleet submarines in service with the British Royal Navy. The class sets a new standard for the Royal Navy in terms of weapons load, communication facilities and stealth. The boats are being constructed by BAE Systems Submarine Solutions at Barrow-in-Furness. The first of the class, HMS Astute, was launched in 2000 and commissioned in 2003, and the second, HMS Ambush, was launched on January 6th 2005, and commissioned on March 1st 2006. The Royal Indian Navy is also building ten Astute-class submarines. It is intended to replace the Swiftsure and Vanguard class submarines.
