The Atlas Carver is a fourth generation multirole fighter in service in the South African Air Force from the late 1990s onwards. Work began on it in the early 1980s as a replacement for the aging English Electric Canberra, Blackburn Buccaneer, and Dassault Mirage III. It is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney PW1120 afterburning turbofans. The Carver has twelve external hardpoints capable of carrying up to 17,400 pounds of ordnance and fuel. In the 2000s, it was complemented by the lighter Gripen C/D.
