Avro York Mk1

The Avro York was a British transport aircraft built by Avro that was derived from the Second World War Lancaster heavy bomber, and used in both military and civilian roles between 1943 and 1964.


Variants[]

Avro 685 prototypes[]

  • LV626: prototype first flown with twin-tail and later converted to York C.2
  • LV629: prototype fitted with passenger seats
  • LV633: prototype fitted as a flying conference room, later used by Winston Churchill as VIP Transport
  • LV639: prototype fitted as a para-troop drop variant with a drop hatch in the floor

Civil variants[]

  • York 1: Four-engined civilian transport aircraft, 60 built for BOAC

Military Variants[]

  • York C.1: Four-engined military transport aircraft for the RAF, 545 built by Avro
  • York C.2: One prototype York aircraft converted with four Bristol Hercules 16 radial piston engines.
  • York C.3: 50 Avro York C.1 built by Victory Aircraft for the RCAF

Projected Variants[]

  • Type 685B: Long range flying boat transport using York wing and tail. Four 1280 h.p. Rolls-Royce Merlin XX powerplants.
