The Battle of Trieste (August 6–9, 1942) was a short, yet fierce, battle fought between the Soviet 555th Rifle Corps under General Konstantin Rokossovsky, and assaulting Canadian forces from the 1st Canadian Corps under General Harry Crerar. It was the first large-scale battle to be fought outside of the Italian Peninsula in the European Theater of World War II since the Fall of France. The battle took place near the Adriatic Sea city of Trieste, with its peacetime population of 200,000.
