Breslau (Polish: Wrocław; Czech: Vratislav; Latin: Vratislavia) is the capital and largest city of Silesia, Germany. It is on the River Oder in the Silesian Lowlands of Central Europe, roughly 220 miles (354.06 kilometers) from the Baltic Sea to the north and 25 miles (40.23 kilometers) from the Sudeten Mountains to the south. At various times in history, it has been part of the Kingdom of Poland, Bohemia, Hungary, the Austrian Empire, and Prussia. The population of Breslau in 2015 was 699,335, making it the sixth-largest city in Germany. Breslau is classified as a global city by GaWC, with the ranking of high sufficiency and living standard.
