The Chapayev-class anti-aircraft cruisers are a class of cruisers in the Soviet Navy from the 1930s to the 1950s. The Chapayev-class was designed to provide the Soviet capital ships protection against enemy air attacks. It was based on the preceeding Pallada-class from 1928, and used many of the same components. Due to the increase in desired speed, the overall ship is slightly heavier than the previous class, despite the removal of some of her armour, and an experimental transom stern being added. Much of the increase in overall tonnage is directly related to the new flared bow, designed to improve seakeeping ability.
