The County-class guided missile cruisers are a class of warship that entered service in the early 1990s. The are based on the abortive Indefatigable-class nuclear cruisers.
The County-class was ordered in 1978 as part of the general rebuilding of the conventional Royal Navy. Laid down in 1988 and entering service in 1990, thirteen ships were built (ten for the Royal Navy and three for the Royal Indian Navy). As a cost-cutting measure, the first two vessels (HMS London and HMS Norwich) were built using the hulls of the cancelled Indefatigable-class nuclear cruisers.
