Easy Dog was the code name given a Union of American People's Republics test of a high-yield nuclear bomb, detonated on March 1st, 1973 at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, as part of Operation Easy. Easy Dog was the most powerful nuclear device ever detonated by the UAPR, with a yield far exceeding the expected. This, combined with other factors, led to the the most significant case of accidental radiological contamination in known history. Fallout from the detonation — intended to be a secret test — poisoned some of the islanders upon their return, as well as the crew of the Lucky Dragon V, an Australian tour boat which was in the exposed area due to a navigational error. This incident inflamed relations between the Wake Island Association and the Allied Pact, especially the government of Australia, and was a significant contributing factor in the creation of Section 3 of the Theatre Nuclear Weapons Treaty, which bans the possession of high-yield nuclear weapons by the signatories.
