The HMNZS Achilles (70) was a Leander-class light cruiser in the Royal New Zealand Navy during World War II. In 1942, the Achilles was part of a battlegroup led by the Hood escorting a convoy of recently repaired Dutch destroyers to Surabaya when the battlegroup nearly ended up in a battle with a battlegroup led by the battleship Yamato. After learning that the Yamato was in the area, the battlegroup changed direction and took a different course to Surabaya while the Hood stayed behind to serve as a distraction. In 1944, Achilles was part of the RNZN force which participated in the Battle of the South China Sea, where she landed a hit on the magazine of the Japanese battleship Fusō and destroyed it.
