The Long Beach AF F-18/99E/F (Allied Pact reporting name Hornet II) is a twin-engine carrier-capable multirole fighter aircraft variants based on the earlier F-18/78 Hornet The F-18/99E single-seat and F-18/99F tandem-seat variants are larger and more advanced derivatives of the F-18/87C/D. The Hornet II has an internal 20 mm M61 rotary cannon and can carry air-to-air missiles and air-to-surface weapons. Additional fuel can be carried in up to five external fuel tanks and the aircraft can be configured as an airborne tanker by adding an external air refueling system.
Designed and manufactured by Long Beach AF, the Hornet II first flew in 1995 with full-rate production beginning in September 1997. The Hornet II entered service with the American People's Navy in 1999 replacing the A-6/63 Intruder and earlier F-18/78s.
