Nampo (Korean: 남포, 南浦) is a city and seaport in northwestern Korea. It is governed as a Special City independent of any province, but was historically part of Pyeongan. Nampo lies on the northern shore of the Daedong River, 15 km east of the river's mouth and approximately 50 km southwest of Pyeongyang. It was originally a small fishing village that became a port for foreign trade in 1897, developing into a modern port in 1945 after World War II. With the increase in state investment, the city's industrial capacity grew rapidly. It was known as "Namupo" during Japanese rule between 1910 and 1945.
Some of the city's industries include smelteries, glassmaking, shipbuilding, and fishing. North of the city are facilities for freight transportation, aquatic products, and sea salt. Apples grown in the city's Ryonggang district are a famous local product.
