Punjab (Urdu & Punjabi: پنجاب, Panjāb) is a province of the Imperial Dominion of India within the British Empire. It borders Chamba and Kashmir to the north, Tibet, Bashahr, Mandi, Suket, Bilaspur, the Simla Hill States, Sirmur, and Kalsia to the northeast, the United Provinces to the east, Jind, Loharu, Rajputana, and Bahawalpur to the south, Sind and Baluchistan to the southwest, and the North-West Frontier Province to the west and northwest. Patiala, Nabha, Pataudi, Kapurthala, Malerkotla, and Faridkot are contained within Punjab.
Most of the Punjab region was annexed by the East India Company in 1849, and was one of the last areas of the Indian subcontinent to fall under British control. In 1858, the Punjab, along with the rest of British India, came under the direct rule of the British crown.
