The Republic of China Naval Aviation Command (Chinese: 中華民國海軍航空指揮部; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó Hǎijūn Hángkōng Zhǐhuībù) is the naval aviation branch of the Republic of China Navy. The ROCNAC's primary mission is to defend ROC territories and the sea lanes that surround the ROC against an attack by the People's Republic of China or Wake Island Association.
History[]
The ROC Naval Aviation Command was formed in 1953 when the Republic of China purchased a pair of Colossus-class light carriers from the British Empire. The first aircraft purchased for the ROCN's carriers were 72 Hawker Sea Hawks, 48 Westland Wyvern, 16 Fairey Spearfish AEW.1, and 24 Westland Whirlwind ASW/SAR helicopters. For land based aviation, the ROCN would purchase the Avro Shackleton MR.3 maritime patrol aircraft and the De Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter SAR aircraft. They would also purchase the Supermarine Seafang as a carrier based trainer aircraft.
