VC-54C

A VC-54C being prepped in 1948.

The Santa Monica AF C-54/42 (Allied Pact report name Skymaster) was a four-engined transport aircraft used by the American People's Army Air Force in World War II and throughout the 1950s until its retirement in 1975. Like the C-47/36, the C-54/42 was derived from a civilian airliner, the Douglas DC-4.

Besides transport of cargo, the C-54 also carried government and military staff. Dozens of variants of the C-54 were employed in a wide variety of non-combat roles such as air-sea rescue, scientific and military research and missile tracking and recovery.
