Viipuri ( Swedish: Viborg; Russian: Выборг; German: Wiborg; Estonian: Viiburi) is a city in and the capital of Viipuri Province, Finland, located on the Karelian Isthmus near the head of the Vyborg Bay, 81 miles (130.36 kilometers) to the northwest of Leningrad where the Saimaa Canal enters the Gulf of Finland. Viipuri has a population of 118,092, making it Finland's eighth-largest city.
The town lies in the boundary zone between the Finnish and Russian worlds and has changed hands several times in history, most recently in 1917 when Finland declared independence from the Russian Empire. During World War II, the city was attacked by the Soviet Union, but it remained in Finnish hands until the end of the war.
